Instructions on how to input the search textThe text in the search form should be written in the current form of writing. The search program can look for the data written in various ways. The letters may be in lower or upper case. Only those fields that have input text (numbers etc.) affect the search. The other fields can be left empty.It is not necessary to include all of the text. The wild cards * and ? can be used. * represents any string of characters (also no character) and ? represents one character. E.g. with the search text *Kuona*, Ala-Kuona, Ylä-Kuona, and other texts including Kuona are also found. *Kuona finds, in addition to Kuona, Ala-Kuona and Ylä-Kuona. Kuona* finds, in addition to Kuona, e.g. Kuonan torppa, etc. The search program automatically uses the wild card * at the end of the word. Thus Kuona is the equivalent of Kuona*. To search a word ending exactly as written, add a period. E.g. Berg. finds only the text Berg, but not Bergholm. When searching from several parishes a wild card should not be used in the beginning of the word. This would increase the search time considerably. The wild card, however, can be used at the end of the word.
First nameThe first name should be written in its present form. The search program can search names based on both the Finnish and the Swedish form of spelling.Examples:

Patronymic (the name of the father)It is best to write the patronymic in its present form. The search program can search names based on both the Finnish and the Swedish form of spelling. The patronymic can be written either with or without the ending (poika/son tytär/dotter/dr). During the test phase of this program it is best to use the Swedish name with the ending son or dr.Examples:

Last nameIt is best to write the last name as currently spelled. It creates a problem to standardize the last names, and different spellings should be tried if data seems to be missing. Often it is best to use about the first five letters of the beginning of the name, in which case all the names beginning that way are found.It is good to note that in Western Finland the patronymic and not the last name was often used. If the field is left empty, all values of that field are accepted.
Village, house, etc.The names of the villages, houses, etc. should be written in their present forms. During the test phase the place names often are not standardized, and the searches may be difficult. If relevant information is not found, it is best to use the spelling found in the original sources or at the beginning of those names.
