Instructions on the search

General

The data included in the history books has been put into a database and standardized so that searches are possible. The data is intended only for searches and not to replace the original history books or their hand written copies ("black books"). The data may include mistakes and all information should be checked from the original source.

Note that the database does not include events from the 20th century. Therefore it is useless to try to search events e.g. from the years 1950-75. Detailed information about the data included can be found in statistics-searches.

Starting page - list of parishes

You must first select the parishes from which to search. If you know the right parish, it is best to limit the search to this parish. Searches from several parishes take much more time and often give irrelevant information. If you search from several parishes at the same time, it is recommended that you limit the search by search criteria in order to get smaller and more relevant output. Often it is enough to include the beginning of the last name (if the name is not very common).

How to search

The aim of the search is to standardize the text in the history books to a current way of spelling. E.g. the original name forms Henr., Henric, Hinric, etc. have been standardized to Henrik. As such it does not matter what the standardized name is, as it is used only to help the search. The results of the search are shown in the original form. Whether you search with Henric, Henrik, Heikki etc. you will get the same result. It is best to search by the present names, even though the same data is found with several name forms (e.g. all the names used in the history books).

Standardization used in this program does not take a stand on how the names should be presented in genealogy. The output gives only the original name.

Note! Standardization is not yet ready, and it is not always easy to find the right data. If you have difficulties in finding the names, please, read carefully instructions on how to input the search text.

Search forms

The search is done through a form, on which you can feed the search criteria. The criteria are sent to the server, which returns the applicable data found in the database in a table. After filling in the search criteria in the form the search is started by clicking the Submit-button.

Read also the more detailed instructions for using the books of christened, married and buried as well as of those who have moved in or out.

Examples for searches

Background: We know that a man named Matti Juhonpoika was born about 1720 in Teisko.

Search: Select first the parish Teisko and then the book of christened. As search criteria include Matti as the first name of the child and Juho as the first name of the father. The years can be limited to e.g. 1710-1730. With these criteria you find four Matti Juhonpoika (Mats Johansson), and it should be easy to identify the right Matti.

Background: We found Anna Mankonen in a communion book, but could not find her in the book of the christened of the same or neighbouring parishes.

Search: This is an example of the superiority of computer searches. Choose all parishes and the book of christened. As search criteria include Anna as the first name of the child and Manko as the last name of the father. The search program finds all texts starting Manko, e.g. Mankonen, Mankoin etc. If the names were fully standardized, this would not be necessary. So far, however, it is often best to write only the beginning of the word (usually about five letters depending on the word).

We could have limited the search further by estimating the birth date of Anna Mankonen and including only the years around the estimated year of birth. In this case it is not necessary, as only two persons were found, both from the parish of Sumiainen. They happen to be born the same year, thus if no more information was initially available, further research is needed using e.g. the communion books of Sumiainen.

The other books can be searched in similar ways. The books of married and moved can be especially useful in finding people who have moved from parish to parish.

Test phase

The search program is still partly in test phase. All notices of errors and comments are welcome. Feedback can be sent by e-mail to historia@genealogia.fi.
